1. Did you know that Britain is responsible for the criminalisation of LGBTQ+ people in 34 countries across the world today?
These countries are former colonies of the British Empire.
Alongside so called “civilisation”, colonial Britain imported “buggery laws” that are still preserved today
One of these countries is Trinidad and Tobago, where activist Jason Jones successfully challenged these laws in 2018 winning a historical case that was then cited to remove similar homophobic law in India, the largest democracy in the world.
We wish this victory was the happy ending of the story. Unfortunately it didn’t.
2. Did you know that a British colonial era institution, called the Privy Council, remains the final court of appeal for Trinidad and Tobago and several other Commonwealth countries?
In 2025 the Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago appealed the 2018 judgment, which means Jason now has to fight this at the supreme court, which for Trinidad and Tobago is the Privy Council in London, where of course there is no representation of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago (or any other country outside the UK for that matters!)
if Jason fails, you, the British taxpayer, will have paid to uphold the criminalisation of 8,000,000* people around the world
*That’s the population of English speaking Caribbean countries and Mauritius
3. Did you know there is something you can do right now to help Jason secure this historic victory?
The United Kingdom, through the JCPC, has the opportunity to help dismantle the discriminatory legal framework it imposed through colonialism—a form of historical redress that recognises Britain's moral responsibility for the ongoing harm these laws cause.
Up to four other Caribbean countries could immediately have similar laws overturned. The 29 Commonwealth countries still maintaining colonial-era anti-homosexuality laws would have strong precedent to follow suit.
A victory would help protect the democratic rights and body autonomy of the region's 45 million citizens.
This is not merely a legal case—it is a potential watershed moment in the global fight for LGBTQ+ rights, with the power to liberate millions from centuries of colonial oppression.
Be part of this historic moment. Help us raise awareness and funds to ensure this legal case succeeds!
